Stanislao “Stanko” Radikon, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 62, is now an essential point of reference for the movement of natural wine and the for so-called “orange wine” (wines with long maceration) trend in Italy.
The company has a long history of viticulture in Oslavia, in the Collio Goriziano of Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the border with Slovenia. The area is historically suited to viticulture thanks to the soils characterized by the “Ponca”, a composition of marl and sandstone, highly impermeable, dating back to the oceanic era.
In 1995 Stanko Radikon, who was already involved in the company since the 1980s, decided to take a different path from traditional winemaking style of the Region, characterized by the introduction of steel fermentation, massive introduction of technology in the cellar, fertilizers and chemical pesticides in the vineyard. Radikon chooses instead to proceed with a decrease, almost disappearance, of any intervention in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in wood, first in barriques, then in wooden vats, with long macerations on the skins, and consequent oxidation, also and above all for the whites, that represents the main production of the company and of the territory, with use of native and traditional varieties. Aging in wood for several years, also for white wines, and further passage in the bottle, followed by bottling, which nowadays is operated without sulfur addition.
The final product is a completely natural wine, but with the potential and structure for a long aging. To make it all possible, the main condition is a perfect fruit arriving to the cellar. Maturation is followed with great care and the harvest takes place exclusively when the fruit is fully ripe, collected in small baskets, to allow the skins to arrive in to the cellar in excellent conditions and to release, during the maceration phase, all the substances useful for natural conservation.
Today at the helm of the company, Saša, Stanko’s son, has a degree in viticulture and enology and carries on the family’s production methodology, supported by more and more studies, research and innovation, to improve, every year, the techniques and the final product, last of all, a new choice of corks for long aging wines. Deciding to bring technology and chemistry to the essential requires, if anything, more work, certainly not less.
Oslavje is one of the company’s historic wines: a blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon, traditional local varieties, designed for long aging, especially as a so-called Fuori dal Tempo (out of time) version specifically released later to show its potential.
