The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux received immediate and critical attention from the international press. Not an easy vintage, it was however masterfully managed by the great Château. After a difficult spring, June kicked off a warm season, allowing the fruit to fully ripen, despite a few storms in July, which were well handled especially by the more cobble-rich soils. New rains in autumn allowed temperatures to drop and wait for the right period for the harvest.
In the words of the Château:
“The Grand Vin of Château Margaux 2019 is an excellent vintage and one of the precious wines we have been lucky enough to produce this decade, in 2015, 2016, 2018 and now 2019.
Cabernet Sauvignon still forms the heart of the Château Margaux, accounting for 90% of the assemblage. Merlot accounts for 7%. In addition to our emblematic parcels, this year we have added the Merlots from the Haut du Jardin parcel which bring body and charm to the wine as a whole. The Cabernet Franc (2%) and the Petit Verdot (1%) complete the assemblage. Château Margaux represents 37% of the harvest.
The Grand Vin of Château Margaux 2019 will be the first to take full advantage of the new facilities in the second-year cellar, the construction of which was begun by André Mentzelopoulos at the end of the 1970s. Modified several times over the years, it recently underwent extensive renovation work and has been completed, we are delighted to say, just as his grandson, Alexis Leven-Mentzelopoulos, joins the Château Margaux team. He and his sister Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos represent the future of the Estate. (April 2020).”
The fame of Château Margaux precedes it and makes it one of the legends of Bordeaux, starting from its soils, historically recognized for their vocation to viticulture thanks to their exposure and terroir, and the great winemaking tradition, which made it one of the only 4 Château to have received the status of Premier Cru in the 1855 classification.
Although the roots of these lands, of their fame for great wines and of the Margaux name go back to the 12th century, it is since 1700’s that the fame of this Château and of its wines reached the status they have today. Despite many acquisitions and changes of ownership, today the control is of the Greek Mentzelopoulos family, thanks to the guidance of Corinne Mentzelopoulos.

Power and elegance meet in this wine, as the stylistic signature of the Château.
The unique and complex aromas do not detract from the complexity of the structure.
A wine to pair with meat dishes with complex preparations but a delicate profile.
In spite of the fact that a great part of it is carried out by high-clearance tractors and equipment that is of ever-increasing efficiency, the winery makes it a point to keep the work of the land traditional. Ploughing (surfacing and desurfacing, surfacing, desurfacing rhythmically) is done in an almost unchanging way. Manure is carried out in the vineyards with completely organic components. Other typical works are carried out by hand.
The interest in research doesn’t only apply to new techniques, but also the old, traditional ones. The property is conducting ploughing experiments with a horse as well.
Fermentation in oak, aging in new-oak barriques for approximately 22 months.
