Tenuta San Guido, meglio nota con il nome del suo vino di punta: Sassicaia, ha scritto la storia del vino in Maremma e del blend “in stile Bordeaux” in Toscana.
Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, nasce a fine ‘800 da famiglia di origini piemontesi che conta esperti di viticoltura, e studia agraria a Pisa, innamorato dei vini francesi. Dopo gli studi, con la moglie Clarice della Gherardesca, discendente di una delle più nobili famiglie toscane, si trasferisce nella tenuta di lei, Tenuta San Guido in Maremma, e inizia a studiare i terreni, scoprendo un’affinità con i suoli ricchi di ciottoli della zona di Graves, nel Bordeaux. Da quel momento, decide di dedicare una parte della sua attività alla viticoltura e vinificazione, lavorando per produrre un vino che potesse rivaleggiare con i grandi vini francesi dell’epoca, pur rispettando le sue origini.
Al tempo la Maremma non era un territorio considerato per la sua produzione vinicola e lo stesso Mario Incisa, pur creando il suo vino “bordolese”, il primo di questo tipo nell’area, lo utilizza esclusivamente per il consumo privato, all’interno della tenuta, concentrandosi su altre attività di grande rilievo per la valorizzazione del territorio quali l’allevamento di cavalli locali, la creazione di un’oasi privata e la presidenza del neo-creato WWF, dimostrando innanzitutto una passione per questa terra, per le sue ricchezze e per la loro protezione.
Nel 1968, infine, Sassicaia viene proposto al mercato, ricevendo un riscontro estremamente positivo, tanto da essere assimilato ad un Premier Cru bordolese. Negli anni seguenti, la Tenuta si impegna a migliorare ulteriormente i suoi vini ma anche a dar loro un posto all’interno della denominazione italiana, con la nascita della IGT e poi della DOC Bolgheri.
Oltre a Sassicaia, l’azienda produce altre due etichette. Guidalberto, nato nel 2000 in omaggio dell’avolo materno Guidalberto della Gherardesca, creatore del famoso Viale dei Cipressi e pioniere dell’agricoltura, è un vino creato per risultare più facilmente avvicinabile, grazie alla maggiore percentuale di Merlot, anche bevuto in annate più giovani. I terreni sono variegati, con zone ricche di calcare, sassi e parzialmente di argilla, con esposizione Sud, Sud-Ovest.
