Gattinara is a Municipality of the Novara province, in the north-east of Piedmont. Historically vocated to the cultivation of vines, planted by Romans in the 2nd Century BC, local wines always had international recognition and visibility. One of the reasons of such success is for sure the terroir: volcanic soils rich in ferrous and mineral components, perfect for these wines.
Nonetheless, we need to wait 1991 for this wine to receive the DOCG, with a very rigid production law: Gattinara can only be produced in the Municipality itself, from vines planted not lower than 250 meters above sea level. Nebbiolo (here known as Spanna) needs to constitute at least 90% of the entire blend, even though most producers make it a pure Nebbiolo.
Nervi is an historical producer of this wine, starting in 1906, when Luigi Nervi founded the winery and started to work for the recognitiono of the DOC. After some changes of ownership, due to the unfortunate premature death of family members, in 2018 the Estate was purchased by Roberto Conterno, owner of famous Barolo cellar Giacomo Conterno, who was already consulting for Nervi for some years, opening a new chapter in the history of the winery.
Silky tannins, fruity stracture and spicy notes, typical of Gattinara, this wine pairs well with main courses such as sausages, grilled light meat, fresh or lightly seasoned cheeses.
Best served at 16-18 °C
