Speak of Brunello di Montalcino means to speak of Biondi-Santi. Santi, a well-known family of doctors, naturalists, pharmacists, and university professors, since the beginning of the 19th century, found in the “Tenuta del Greppo”, their own farm, the perfect place to deepen their interests, particularly in the field of viticulture and oenology. The wines of the Montalcino area have been recognized since the Middle Age, with the name of Brunello given to the red grape grown there: a particular clone of the Sangiovese grape. For long time, though, the sweet white wine was the most appreciated and internationally recognized.
Clemente Santi’s studies in viticulture and techniques in the cellar lead their wine to the recognition of “selected red wine (brunello) of 1865” at the Montalcino fair in 1969 and their Moscatello was even awarded in Paris in 1867. There are numerous producers who, in that period, helped to identify the style of those wines called “Brunello” and Clemente Santi is now recognized as the putative father of the denomination. In the same period, European winemakers faced powdery mildew, phylloxera and peronospera: Ferruccio Biondi-Santi (son of Jacopo Biondi and Caterina Santi, who combined the two surnames as a tribute to the maternal dynasty of winemakers) begins to operate a methodical mass selection of Sangiovese, identifying the most resistant clones and creating grafts with American roots and wild cuttings. Hence, the choice to vinify Sangiovese in purity, with techniques designed for long aging, defining the profile of Brunello as we know it today. Biondi-Santi’s fortune lies also, and above all, in the far-sightedness of his characters. Tancredi, son of Ferruccio, introduces the process of “replenishing” the old reserves of the house, establishing the importance, but also the great longevity, of these bottles. Today the family carries on agricultural and winemaking research to continue the family tradition, such as a further mass selection of the vines selected by Ferruccio.
The vineyards of Tenuta del Greppo are located at an altitude of 385-507 meters above sea level, the choice of these altitudes and soils poor in nutrients and rich in skeleton, combined with the strong diurnal temperature range and the choice of south-east and north exposures, are considered by the Company to be fundamental for the optimal expression of this grape.
Aromaticity combined with longevity are typical characteristics of the company’s wines and 2008 is a vintage considered by Franco Biondi-Santi to be among the “exceptional” ones, capable of showing all the potential of this wine.
