Description:

Viognier is a historical French grape, traditionally used to blend in small quantity with Syrah in Rhone Valley, balancing the spiciness and gifting it with unique perfumes. For long time, it was abandoned due to its difficult character and irregular production in the vineyards. It was later re-discovered by a passionate French producer, and nowadays it has re-conquered its fame in the Rhone Valley… and not only. This wine has seen the interest of quite some Italian producers as well.
Among the first to produce a Viognier wine in Piedmont, Abbona family discovered this grape from the French neighbours and decided to produce a 100% version.
The name (meaning “color of the ash”) comes from the grey herons that from time to time stop-by to the lake in the vineyard.


Tasting Notes and Pairing:
Catching the attention as soon as you pour it, the typical and unique aromas only Viognier can deliver immediatly pop to the nose: small white flowers and acacia open the way to notes of peach and apricot. In the mouth, the wine slips smoothly with an oily and embracing texture and notes of ripe fruit, framed by a fresh and elegant closure.
The cleanest pairing to enhance the sensorial journey of this wine may totally be a silver of Parmigiano or hard cheese. Perfect as well with a seafood risotto or just with a simply boiled rice
Suggested serving temperature:
The producer suggests to serve it at 14-16°C
in the vineyard:
Sustainable vineyard management with minimal use of synthetic treatments and use of non-invasive practices.
Hand harvest
Production method and aging:
Soft press, fermentation and aging in acacia barrels at cellar temperature, with selected yeasts and frequent batonage. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out.

  • Membership includes a Wine Concierge service that will be at disposal of the members upon appointment for online and in-person meetings at Relais San Maurizio and in the area. The Concierge service will advice on wines of the San Maurizio Wine Club and Italian wine in general.
  • San Maurizio Wine Club is available to organize winery visits for its members with the Guest Producers of the project.

Upon subscription, you will receive email and whatsapp contact to plan your Wine Concierge appointment and your visits.

EVENTS

  • Members of the Club will be informed via email and on their personal website page of any event planned by the San Maurizio Wine Club for its members.

Events may be free or with an access fee and they may allow to be accompanied by a partner.
