Gamba di Pernice (today registered on the “official record of vines” as “Gamba Rossa”), named for the red stalk that recalls the leg (“gamba”) of the partridge, is an ancient native grape of the Asti region of Monferrato. Documents already state its presence at the beginning of XVIII Century. Soon after, also thanks to its resistance and adaptability, it became known as a table grape, with some vines planted among the rows of the most famous local productions: Barbera and Moscato. We have to wait until 1983 when the producer Valter Bosticardo of Tenuta dei Fiori decides, almost for fun, to vinify it, discovering all the potential of an aromatic vine with unique characteristics, excellent for aging, late ripener and resistant to climate change.
At this point, in 1987, the producer from Calosso, in the Monferrato d’Asti area, decided to dedicate an “illegal” experimental vineyard to this vine, since it was not yet legally recognized. He began to vinify it and, in 1990, to bottle it, at the same time working for the protection and enhancement of the grape. After long studies by leading ampelologists and with the recognition of the native grape under the name of Gamba Rossa (“red leg” to differentiate it from other vines with names related to the partridge bird), finally in 2011 the wine was granted with the DOC Calosso and with its own disciplinary.
Today, there are about 12 producers who have invested in this grape and who produce wine under the name of Calosso DOC, which remains a very small denomination, which mainly covers the Municipality of Calosso and a part of the territories of the nearby Costigliole d’Asti and Castagnole Lanze, with 40,000 bottles produced every year.
The 1990 is the first year Valter Bosticardo decides to bottle and put this wine from his vineyard to the market and it is therefore the oldest label on the market.
