Here is what San Maurizio Wine Club members received in last winter’s Box!
Palmento Costanzo, Mofete Etna Bianco 2021
The Costanzo family’s adventure began in 2010, when they bought a few hectares in the Contrada Santo Spirito di Passopisciaro, on the slopes of Etna. It then continued with the restoration of the ancient Palmento and the preservation of a centuries-old free-range vineyard.
And it is from Contrada Santo Spirito that the Mofete wine comes, an Etna Bianco 70% Carricante and 30% Catarratto, born on soils of volcanic sands and stones. The wine only spends 4 months in steel, in contact with its fine lees, a process that gives the wine complexity and structure.
The taste, however, remains fresh and fragrant, with citrus and mineral notes, which are echoed in the savouriness on the palate.
Casa E. di Mirafiore, Alta Langa Blanc de Noirs 2018
In the heart of the Unesco heritage site, Casa E. di Mirafiore was founded by the son of the first King of Italy, Emanuele Alberto Count of Mirafiore, in 1870 and still preserves the historic cellars and characteristic buildings in the heart of Fontanafredda.
The winery’s Alta Langa Blanc de Noirs is a 100% Pinot Noir, with grapes obtained by gentle pressing and fermentation at a controlled temperature to preserve aromas and freshness. After a maturation of 36 months on the lees in the bottle, the wine is ready for disgorgement and subsequent release.
A wine that balances structure and freshness, in the Alta Langa tradition.
Meyer-Näkel Blauschiefer Spätburgunder
We are in Germany, in the Rhineland wine region of Ahr, one of the lesser-known German regions, whose tradition is closely linked to Pinot Noor (called Spätburgunder there). This is a river valley (the name means ‘water’ in Celtic), thus characterised by steep slopes with soils rich in river rocks, and with an ideal climate for wine growing, protected from rainfall by the mountain ranges to the west.
Blausherfer is one of the flagship wines of the Meyer-Näkel winery, aged in used barriques for 12 months. The final wine is characterised by mineral-rich soils, with notes of small red fruits and slightly toasted nuances.
Frescobaldi – Tenuta Perano, Chianti Classico 2019
Tenuta Perano is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, in a unique position, thanks to its altitude (500 metres above sea level) with steep slopes, in a natural amphitheatre, optimal for light and warmth.
The estate’s Chianti Classico grows on soils rich in skeleton, which are excellent, combined with the altitude, to guarantee the wine freshness and richness of aroma. To enhance these characteristics, the wine is only partially aged in wood, which helps to enrich the bouquet with tertiary notes.
Fresh on the nose as well as in the mouth, this wine is recognisable for its variety of scents, well defined by a unique freshness and cleanliness.
Rosanna Sandri, Damasco Barbaresco 2019
The Rosanna Sandri winery vinifies just 7000 bottles a year. The winery is committed to using sustainable practices. Rosanna has passed on this knowledge and passion to her children, who now oversee production.
The wines for Barbaresco come from MgA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) Rizzi, in the commune of Treiso, a soil rich in white marl, balanced by clay, which gives Barbaresco an elegant, soft and enveloping profile.
The wine is aged for 24 months in large barrels, with long macerations, in the typical classic style of this Denomination, with an eye on respect for nature and impact on the territory.
Barale Fratelli, Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2017
One of the most historic realities of the territory, the Barale winery was founded in 1870, among the pioneers of the wine called Barolo. Still today, the company uses a classic style, which gives a unique continuity to the tradition of this reality.
Barolo del Comune di Barolo comes from vineyards exclusively located in the commune that gives its name to the appellation and, specifically, from the MgA Castellero, Coste di Rose and Preda. Although different in terms of soil and exposure, the Commune of Barolo is characterised by the presence of the well-known Marne di Sant’Agata.
A tasty and at the same time elegant wine. Rich in intense red fruit, accompanied by notes of fresh herbs. Ready to drink now, but also to be left for another 5-6 years.
