“Pergole Torte”, with its characteristic labels of women’s portraits created each year by the artist Alberto Manfredi, has already become a myth in the panorama of Italian wine. This is due to the difficulty of finding it, as it is high priced and with limited production: just 2 hectares in the vineyard that gives the wine its name. Often, due to its Tuscan IGT denomination and fame, this wine is mistaken for a Super-Tuscan, but “Pergole Torte” is actually produced with the most typical grape variety of Tuscany: Sangiovese, in purity.
The choice comes from the enlightened owner of the estate: Sergio Manetti, an industrialist who in 1967 decided to buy a holiday villa: the Montevertine estate, in Radda in Chianti, between Florence and Siena, starting to produce a wine designed for personal consumption. In 1971 the first vintage of his wine was presented at Vinitaly and was met with great success, thus leading Manetti to decide to devote himself full-time to this new business. In 1977 the first vintage of “Pergole Torte” was released. However, the wine at the time did not respect the Chianti Classico disciplinary, which included a percentage of other wine grapes in addition to Sangiovese within the blend. However, the producer decided not to change his wine and to “downgrade” it to Toscana IGT instead, contributing to the birth of the myth. Today, the Chianti Classico disciplinary has changed, however Montevertine has not changed the denomination and its wines remain among the most sought after in the area. Now the company is entrusted to Sergio’s son, Martino.
The Pergole Torte vineyard was planted from 1968 to 1999, the vines, facing north/north-east, on a soil rich in minerals, silt, clay and limestone, at about 450 meters above sea level.
