The winery is located in Costigliole d’Asti in the Monferrato astigiano. Evidence of the agricultural property date back to 1400, but in isn’t until the second half of the XX Century that the heirs of the family decided to work with wine, producing a series of unique labels, every one a discovery.
In fact the producer, a passionate experimenter, works hard to aim at quality as well as longevity in his wines, with a series of studies on local varieties as well as on a selection of international wine grapes, re-interpreted with the charachters and soils of the region.
The red wine “St Marsan Rosso” (and, yes, he produces a white St Marsan as well) comes from vine plants brought to Italy by Bertelli from wineries in the Rhone area, notoriously famous for being Syrah’s home. The name, as stated on the label, comes from Bertelli’s homage to an Italian: Marquis San Marzano, owner, once, of the Costigliole d’Asti’s Castle, who started cultivating grape varieties coming from his beloved Rhone area.
With regards to 1998, a particularly fortunate vintage, go check the producer’s white wine “Plissè”, another of his interpretations of an international variety in Monferrato.
Honest, rustic wine, it starts with wild and spicy scents, and then opens up to an unexpected sweetness. An original and territorial interpretation of Syrah.
