Château Mouton Rothschild is undoubtedly one of the institutions of the Medoc and Pauillac: among the most important appellations of Bordeaux.
Its history is linked to that of the famous Rothschild family, noble English descent of bankers and entrepreneurs, and was acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel, who combined his surname with the original name of the estate, giving it its current title. The children, however, and the other branches of the family seemed little interested in this French investment and the property did not receive particular attention until his nephew: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, now a famous historical figure in the world of international wine, came into the picture. The Baron Philippe, professional car driver, screenwriter and lover of the arts, immediately recognized the unique potential of the estate and devoted himself to it with passion, transforming it into the excellence it is today. He first decided, in strong contrast with the fashion of the period, to suspend the sale of bulk wine and to bottle and label the wines directly in the estate (with due changes to the structure of the buildings). He commissioned the first label to an artist, although even this choice was a bit too much ahead of its time and the idea was not repeated. He also pursued the enhancement of the region as a whole, starting a work of acquiring neighboring estates (including Clerc Milon and Lafite), and a wine distribution company, which continues today, together with numerous other initiatives.
Meanwhile, the wines of the Château established themselves as a model of quality for the region: the Baron managed to obtain the recognition of “Premier Cru Classé” (or Frist Growth in Bordeaux), which was denied to the Château in 1855. In 2006, during an auction of Christie’s, the wines of the Château became the most expensive bottles in the world.
More than 40 years after his death, today the daughter and then the grandchildren continue the tradition.
The property is located on the top of a “small hill” (“Mouton” from the old French “motte”) which receives the influence of the Gironde river, while maintaining an elevated position. The soils, as typical of the region, are rich in gravel and extremely draining.
Petit Mouton is the second label of the estate, produced with the same care and the same characteristics, from younger vines than the “historic” vines made available to the house cuvée. With an excellent quality-price ratio, this wine represents today a pleasant way to taste one of the most expensive and famous wine productions in the world.
