Description:

Conteisa: Ten years from the first vintage of this wine, 2006 Conteisa represents Gaia winery’s expression of Nebbiolo grape in the Barolo area cru Cerequio, located in the municipality of La Morra, at the border with that of Barolo and as such disputed among the two (hence the name of the wine: “dispute” in Piedmontese).
The wine is matched by the other label of the winery coming from the Barolo area: Sperss, born in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba, famously polar to that of La Morra for its soils and the expression of the wines.
Both of them are made from Nebbiolo grape on potentially Barolo soil, but they contain a slight percentage of Barbera and as such, for producer’s choice as well as disciplinary law, they are not suitable to be called “Barolo”. 2006 vintage has been defined by critics as “reticent” and “under wrap” in its young years. Together with the firm tannins of this wine, this gives hope for a good aging and an interesting evolution about 15 to 20 years after the harvest.
Sperss: The name of the wine, Sperss, comes from a dialect word defining the melancholy for lot times and it represents the comeback of Gaha to the Barolo area, in 1988, with the purchase of land and a property in Serralunga d’Alba.
Just like its “twin brother” Conteisa, produced in La Morra, even though the grapes come from the Barolo area, this wine is not classified as Barolo, as the producer decided to add a small percentage of Barbera to the blend.
The impressive scores received by all major international critics clearly point out the fact that this vintage represents a true excellence in its style.


Tasting Notes and Pairing:
Conteisa: Wine with a rich and complex profile: floral notes and red ripe fruits, with earthy notes, chocolate and e balsamic touch. The fan of flavours is lifted by firm tannins and crispy acidity.
To fully enjoy the facets and complexity of this wine, pair it with a tasty but simple dish: a medium-cooked grilled chop, with quality meat.
Sperss: A vintage of impressive elegance: not excessively extrovert, but instead delicately restrain with a fine and velvety texture, notes of wild berries, spices and a soft smoke taste.
Perfect with a refined meat chop, such as a good fillet. Not too rare, in order for the iron notes not to alter the tasting.
Suggested serving temperature:
It can be served slightly more chilled, at about 17-18°C or at 19-20°C for a touch of warmth and softness.
Suggestion to open it about 1 to 2 hours before serving it.. And let it breath in the glass as well.
in the vineyard:
Gaja was one of the first producers who focused on a modern management of vineyards with the green harvest and grape selection.
The winery believes in a strong respect for the land and the grapes.
Production method and aging:
Short macerations are generally typical of the style of the winery.
The wine undergoes a passage in oak: small barrels for the first year, then large old casks.
